Gemini Review (2026): Plans, Pricing and Who It's For
Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, and in 2026 it has become the most aggressively priced of the big three. Google cut its entry plan to $4.99 a month in June, split its top tier into $99.99 and $199.99 options in May, and in October made its new flagship model, Gemini 4 Argon, available to paying subscribers. This review explains what each plan includes, where the limits are, and who should pay for which tier.
As with every review on this site, this is a research-based assessment built from Google’s plans page, its developer documentation and recent independent coverage. We don’t claim hands-on benchmarks or publish speed or accuracy figures we can’t source. Scores come from our published rubric.
What Gemini is
Gemini is a chat assistant available on the web, in Android and iOS apps, inside Chrome and across Google’s own products. You can type, talk or upload files, and it writes, summarizes, searches, analyzes documents, and generates images and video. On the free plan, Google’s plans page lists Deep Research (multi-step web research that produces a report), Gemini Live (voice conversations), Canvas (a workspace for documents and code), Gems (custom assistants) and image generation and editing.
What sets Gemini apart is that it is sold as part of a Google subscription rather than as a standalone app. Every paid plan bundles Google cloud storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and other Workspace apps, and credits for Flow, Google’s AI video tool. The higher plans add consumer extras such as YouTube Premium and Google Home Premium. If you already pay Google for storage, a Gemini plan can replace that bill rather than add to it.
The model lineup changed in October. Google’s developer documentation describes Gemini 4 Argon as its flagship reasoning model, built for complex coding, math and science problems and long multi-step agent tasks. Independent coverage reports it became generally available on October 13, 2026, and Google’s plans page now lists it on AI Pro and Ultra. Google has published benchmark comparisons for the model, but those are vendor-reported, and we don’t repeat them as findings.

Free ($0). The free plan uses the Flash-Lite model and includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, image generation and 15 GB of storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos. Google doesn’t publish a fixed message count; limits are described in relative terms on every plan.
Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month). AI Plus launched in the US in January at $7.99, and 9to5Google and Engadget reported in June that Google cut it to $4.99 and doubled the storage. It now gives twice the free plan’s usage on the Flash model, video generation, 200 Flow credits, 400 GB of storage and Gemini in Gmail and Vids. It is the cheapest paid plan from any of the three major assistant makers; ChatGPT Go costs $8.
Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month). This is the plan we recommend for most people. It adds Gemini 4 Argon and the Pro models, four times the free usage, 1,000 Flow credits, 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, Chrome’s auto browse feature, entry-level limits for Google Antigravity (Google’s coding agent platform), Google Home Premium Standard and YouTube Premium Lite. Google’s FAQ cites a one-million-token context window for Deep Research on this plan.
Google AI Ultra ($99.99 a month). The entry Ultra tier gives five times AI Pro’s usage, 10,000 Flow credits, 20 TB of storage, the full YouTube Premium individual plan, Google Home Premium Advanced and priority access to new features, including Agent Mode.
Google AI Ultra 20x ($199.99 a month). The top tier gives twenty times AI Pro’s usage, 25,000 Flow credits and access to Project Genie, Google’s interactive world model, in select countries. Engadget and Android Authority reported that Ultra cost $249.99 a month before Google split it into two tiers at its May developer conference.
For businesses. Google sells Gemini to organizations separately as Gemini Enterprise. Its plans page lists Business from $21 per seat a month for up to 300 seats, and Standard or Plus from $30 per seat a month. Developers pay for the Gemini API by usage, which consumer plans don’t cover.
Key features
- Gemini 4 Argon. Google’s newest flagship model, on AI Pro and Ultra. It is the main reason to step up from Plus.
- Deep Research. Multi-step research that produces a cited report, now listed on every plan including Free.
- Image and video generation. Image generation is free; video generation starts at AI Plus, with Flow credits rising sharply by tier.
- Workspace integration. Gemini works inside Gmail, Docs, Vids and Drive on paid plans, which is its biggest practical advantage for Google users.
- Bundled storage and extras. From 400 GB on Plus to 20 TB or more on Ultra, plus YouTube Premium Lite on Pro and full YouTube Premium on Ultra.
- Gemini Live. Voice conversations, available on every plan.
Our rubric gives Gemini 9 out of 10 for features, second only to ChatGPT among the general assistants we cover, because it covers text, voice, research, images and video in one subscription.
Who it’s for
Gemini suits people who already run their work and personal life through Google: Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android. It is also the cheapest way to get a paid assistant plus meaningful cloud storage.
By plan:
| If you… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Want to try it or use it occasionally | Free |
| Want more usage and 400 GB of storage on a budget | AI Plus ($4.99) |
| Use AI most days and want the strongest model | AI Pro ($19.99) |
| Generate a lot of video or need much higher limits | AI Ultra ($99.99) |
| Run heavy agent or video workloads daily | AI Ultra 20x ($199.99) |
| Need admin controls for a company | Gemini Enterprise (from $21 per seat) |
Limitations
- Limits are relative, not fixed. Google describes usage as multiples of the free plan or of AI Pro, without a published message count, so it is hard to know in advance when you will hit a cap.
- Best value assumes Google’s ecosystem. The storage, Gmail and Docs features and YouTube extras are only worth paying for if you use them. Outside Google’s apps, the plans look more like ChatGPT’s and Claude’s.
- Plus doesn’t get the flagship model. AI Plus is limited to the Flash model, so it is not a cheap route to Gemini 4 Argon.
- Some features are regional. Google notes that Project Genie and some advanced features such as Tasks launch first in select countries.
- Support. Our rubric scores Gemini 7 out of 10 on support: consumer plans rely mainly on help articles and community forums.
How it compares
At around $20 a month, Google AI Pro, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro cost almost the same, so the choice comes down to strengths. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison goes through the three side by side. In short: ChatGPT has the broadest standalone feature set and the most third-party integrations, as our ChatGPT review explains. Claude is the specialist for long-form writing, document analysis and coding, as our Claude review covers. Gemini wins on value, with the cheapest paid entry point and storage bundled in.

Verdict
Gemini earns an overall score of 8.7 out of 10 on our rubric, led by features, pricing and value (9 each), with ease of use at 8.5 and support (7) as its weakest area. It is the best-value AI assistant for anyone already using Google’s apps, and AI Pro at $19.99 a month is the plan most people should buy, because it unlocks Gemini 4 Argon, Workspace integration and 5 TB of storage.
Choose AI Plus at $4.99 if you mainly want more usage and storage and don’t need the flagship model. Move to Ultra only if you generate a lot of video or regularly hit AI Pro’s limits. If you don’t use Gmail, Docs or Drive, compare Gemini against ChatGPT and Claude on features alone, since much of its value comes from the bundle.
