Claude Review (2026): Plans, Pricing and Who It's For
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, and in 2026 it has become the default pick for people whose work is mostly words and code: long reports, contracts, research summaries, and software. It is also the assistant whose lineup changed most quietly this autumn, with its Cowork agent folded into everyday chat and API credits added to the Max and Team plans. This review explains what each plan includes, where the limits are, and who should pay for which tier.
As with every review on this site, this is a research-based assessment built from Anthropic’s pricing page, its help center articles and recent independent coverage. We don’t claim hands-on benchmarks or publish speed or accuracy figures we can’t source. Scores come from our published rubric.
What Claude is
Claude is a chat assistant available on the web, on desktop apps for Mac and Windows, and on iOS and Android. You can type or upload files, and it writes, summarizes, analyzes, searches the web, runs code and builds documents. Anthropic’s own pricing page lists Artifacts (interactive documents and small apps built in the chat), connectors to other apps, and memory across conversations, all on the free plan.
The paid plans add three things that define Claude in 2026. The first is Opus, Anthropic’s most capable model family. The second is Claude Code, a coding agent that works in your terminal, editor and browser, included from Pro upward. The third is Cowork, the agent that carries out longer multi-step tasks such as building spreadsheets, reports and presentations in the background. Anthropic’s pricing page now says “Claude Cowork is now just Claude”: since mid-September, coverage from Notebookcheck and others reports that Cowork has been merging into the main chat, rolling out to Pro and Max first, with Team and Free to follow.

Free ($0). The free plan is more generous than it used to be. It includes the Sonnet and Haiku models, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, Artifacts, and Anthropic’s design, slides and docs tools. It does not include Opus, Claude Code or Research. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window.
Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed annually). Pro is billed at $200 up front for a year, which works out to $17 a month. It adds Opus, Claude Code, Research, Projects, scheduled tasks, Claude in Chrome and the Microsoft 365 integration, and at least five times the free plan’s usage per session. Pro subscribers can also turn on paid usage credits to keep working after they hit a limit. This is the plan we recommend for most people.
Max 5x ($100 a month) and Max 20x ($200 a month). Max gives five or twenty times Pro’s per-session usage, higher output limits, priority access at peak times and early access to new features. Anthropic’s help center says Max is available on monthly billing only. New this month: Max subscribers get monthly API credits worth $100 (5x) or $200 (20x) for the Claude Platform. Anthropic’s help article says the credits cover the API, Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, but not interactive Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps, and they don’t roll over. One quirk: the pricing page lists Max 20x as “from $100,” while the help center states $200. We use the help center figure.
Team Standard ($25 per seat) and Team Premium ($125 per seat). Team drops to $20 and $100 per seat on annual billing, for 2 to 150 seats. Team adds central billing, single sign-on, Claude Code and Cowork, and pooled API credits of $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, capped at $500 a month. Premium seats get five times Standard usage.
Enterprise ($20 per seat, annual). Enterprise has a 20-seat minimum and bills usage separately at standard API rates, on top of the seat fee. It adds spend controls, role-based access, SCIM, audit logs, custom data retention and a HIPAA-ready offering.
Key features
- Writing and document analysis. Claude’s reputation rests on careful, natural long-form writing and on reading long files. Our rubric gives it 9 out of 10 for ease of use.
- Claude Code. Included from Pro, Claude Code is the main reason many developers pay for Claude. Max raises the allowance enough for daily, hours-long coding sessions.
- Cowork and background tasks. Longer multi-step jobs such as reports, spreadsheets and presentations can keep running in the background, now inside the main chat on Pro and Max.
- Research. Multi-step web research that produces a cited report, from Pro upward.
- Projects and memory. Projects keep files and instructions together; memory carries context across chats on every plan.
- Connectors. Claude connects to other apps and services, and paid plans add Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365.
- No image generation. Claude reads images but does not generate them. This is the clearest feature gap against ChatGPT and Gemini .
Who it’s for
Claude suits writers, analysts, consultants and developers: people who spend their day drafting, reviewing long documents or writing code. It is our second pick in the best AI tools for freelancers, behind ChatGPT, mainly because ChatGPT covers images and voice as well.
By plan:
| If you… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Want to try it or use it occasionally | Free |
| Write, analyze or code most days | Pro ($20, or $17 annual) |
| Code with Claude Code for hours daily | Max 5x ($100) |
| Run agents or Claude Code at very high volume | Max 20x ($200) |
| Need SSO and central billing for a small team | Team Standard ($25 per seat) |
| Have 20+ seats and compliance needs | Enterprise |
Limitations
- Usage limits. Every plan has a session limit that resets every five hours, plus a weekly limit across all models. Anthropic’s help center says usage varies with message length, file size and model, so there is no fixed message count. Heavy days can hit a wall, which is why Pro now offers paid usage credits.
- No image generation. If you need images, you will need a second tool. See our best AI image generators guide.
- Max is monthly only. There is no annual discount on the plans heavy users are most likely to keep.
- Enterprise costs are variable. The $20 seat fee looks low, but all usage is billed on top at API rates, so budgets depend on how much your team uses it.
- Support. Our rubric scores Claude 7 out of 10 on support: consumer plans rely mainly on help articles, with dedicated support reserved for larger contracts.
How it compares
At around $20 a month, Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus and Google AI Pro ($19.99) cost almost the same, so the choice comes down to strengths. Our ChatGPT review explains why ChatGPT wins on breadth: images, voice and a cheaper $8 step up from free. Gemini is better value if you already pay for Google storage and live in Gmail and Docs. Claude is the specialist pick for writing quality, long documents and coding, and its $17 annual Pro rate is the cheapest way into a frontier coding agent among the three.

Verdict
Claude earns an overall score of 8.4 out of 10 on our rubric, led by ease of use (9), with features (8.5) held back by the lack of image generation and support (7) as its weakest area. It is the best AI assistant for people whose work is mostly writing, document analysis and code, and Pro at $20 a month ($17 annual) is the plan most people should buy, because it unlocks Opus, Claude Code and Research.
Stay on Free if you use Claude a few times a week. Move to Max 5x only if you hit Pro’s limits regularly, usually because of Claude Code, and keep in mind that Max is billed monthly. Teams should compare the Team plan’s pooled API credits against their likely usage before choosing between Team and Enterprise.
