ChatGPT Review (2026): Plans, Pricing and Who It's For
ChatGPT is the AI assistant most people try first, and in 2026 it is also the one with the longest price ladder: six consumer and business price points from free to $500 a month. This review explains what each plan includes, where the limits and trade-offs are, and which plan fits which kind of user.
As with every review on this site, this is a research-based assessment built from OpenAI’s plan documentation, help center articles, release notes and recent independent coverage. We don’t claim hands-on benchmarks or publish speed or accuracy figures we can’t source. Scores come from our published rubric.
What ChatGPT is
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s consumer and business chat assistant. You type, talk or upload files, and it answers, writes, analyzes, generates images or carries out multi-step tasks. It runs on the web, on desktop apps for Mac and Windows, and on iOS and Android.
What separates ChatGPT from most rivals is breadth. Text chat, voice conversations, image generation, file and data analysis, deep research reports, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, an agent mode that can work through websites, and OpenAI’s Codex coding agent all sit inside one subscription. Few competitors bundle that many capabilities under a single plan.

Prices in USD, excluding tax. "Annual" means the per-month rate when billed yearly. Last verified October 27, 2026 against OpenAI's pricing page (vendor page not machine-readable; figures cross-checked against multiple recent sources, so confirm before buying).
OpenAI blocks automated reads of its pricing page, so we cross-checked these figures against OpenAI’s help center (as quoted in search results) and several independent pricing guides updated in September and October 2026. Where sources disagreed, we note it below.
Free ($0). You get a capable model with limits on messages, uploads, image creation and deep research. Since February 2026, logged-in adult users in the US see ads on the free plan. Coverage of the rollout says ads are kept away from sensitive topics such as health and politics.
Go ($8 a month). Go raises the free plan’s limits on messages, uploads, images and memory. It is also ad-supported in the US. One guide lists Go at $5.50, which likely reflects regional pricing; most US sources agree on $8.
Plus ($20 a month). Plus is the cheapest ad-free plan and the one we recommend for most people. It adds OpenAI’s reasoning models, more deep research runs, projects, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, agent mode and expanded Codex use. Plus is billed monthly; there is no annual discount.
Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. This is where 2026 got complicated. OpenAI added the $100 tier in April with about 5x Plus usage. At the end of September it launched Pro 500 at $500 a month with about 25x Plus usage and exclusive access to an Ultrafast generation mode. At the same time, it cut the Pro 200 allowance: new subscribers get less than the plan used to offer, and existing subscribers keep their old allowance only through October 29, 2026. One report from September also said Pro 200 was briefly closed to new sign-ups before reopening. Pro plans are not truly unlimited; OpenAI’s help center describes weekly allowances for the Pro models.
Business Standard ($25 per seat). Business drops to $20 per seat on annual billing, with a two-seat minimum. It adds a shared workspace, single sign-on, admin and spend controls, usage analytics, and no training on your data by default.
Business Premium ($125 per seat). Premium seats, announced in August 2026, cost $100 per seat on annual billing. They give about 5x Standard usage with no five-hour limit, and you can mix Premium and Standard seats in one workspace. Enterprise pricing is custom.
Key features
- Model access. Every plan gets OpenAI’s current general model; paid plans unlock reasoning models, and Pro unlocks the Pro models. OpenAI renames and replaces models frequently, so we don’t tie recommendations to specific model names.
- Voice. Real-time voice conversations are available across plans, with higher caps on paid tiers. OpenAI’s September 2026 release notes list up to 15 hours of its live voice model on Pro 100 and unlimited use on Pro 200.
- Image generation. Built in, with limits that rise by plan. This is a genuine differentiator against Claude, which doesn’t generate images.
- Deep research. Multi-step web research that produces a cited report. Limits rise with each tier.
- Projects and memory. Projects keep files and instructions together; memory carries preferences across chats. Paid plans get longer memory.
- Agent mode and Codex. Agent mode can carry out tasks on websites on your behalf. Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent, included from Plus, with much higher allowances on Pro and Business Premium.
- Custom GPTs. Build or use task-specific assistants, with a large third-party library.
Who it’s for
ChatGPT suits people who want one assistant for nearly everything: drafting, summarizing, analyzing spreadsheets, making images, talking through problems by voice and some coding. That breadth makes it a strong default for freelancers and small teams; it’s our top all-round pick in the best AI tools for freelancers.
By plan:
| If you… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Use AI occasionally and don’t mind ads | Free |
| Want more usage on a tight budget | Go ($8) |
| Use AI daily for work | Plus ($20) |
| Code or research for hours every day | Pro 100 ($100) |
| Run agents or Codex at very high volume | Pro 500 ($500) |
| Need admin controls for a team | Business Standard ($25 per seat) |
Limitations
- Plan churn. OpenAI reshaped its Pro lineup several times in 2026, including reducing an existing tier’s allowance. Budgeting more than a few months ahead is hard, and the help center describes allowances as multiples of Plus rather than concrete message counts.
- Ads on the cheap tiers. If ads in an AI assistant bother you, Plus is the real entry point, not Go.
- Expensive top end. Pro 200 now costs the same as before for less usage, and Pro 500 is priced for professionals billing the cost back to clients.
- Support. Our rubric scores ChatGPT lowest on support (7 out of 10): consumer plans rely mainly on help articles and in-app help, with SLAs reserved for Enterprise.
- Pricing transparency. OpenAI’s pricing page can’t be read by automated tools, and third-party guides often lag behind changes. Always confirm the current price at checkout.
How it compares
At the $20 tier, ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro ($19.99) are priced almost identically, so the choice comes down to strengths. Claude is the stronger specialist for long-form writing and coding but has no image generation. Gemini is the better value if you already pay for Google storage, and it works inside Gmail and Docs. ChatGPT wins on breadth and on having a cheap $8 step up from free.

Verdict
ChatGPT earns an overall score of 8.7 out of 10 on our rubric, led by features (9.5) and ease of use (9), with support (7) as its weakest area. It is the most complete AI assistant available, and Plus at $20 a month is the plan most people should buy: it is ad-free and includes nearly every feature OpenAI offers.
Stay on Free or Go if you use ChatGPT casually and can live with ads. Move to Pro 100 only if you hit Plus limits regularly, and treat Pro 200 and Pro 500 as tools for heavy professional use. Because OpenAI reshapes its plans often, check the live price before you commit to an annual business contract.
