Midjourney vs Adobe Firefly (2026): Which AI Image Generator Fits Your Work?

Quick answerAdobe Firefly is the better choice for most business and commercial work: it has a free tier, unlimited standard images from $9.99 a month and models Adobe says are trained on licensed content. Midjourney is the better choice for artists who want its distinctive style and can pay $30 a month for unlimited Relax images.

Midjourney and Adobe Firefly are often named as the two leading AI image generators, but they come from opposite directions. Midjourney is an independent company whose output is known for a distinctive, stylized look. Firefly is Adobe’s generative suite, built to slot into Photoshop, Illustrator and Express and sold on the promise that its own models are trained on licensed content.

We compared them on our published rubric using vendor documentation and recent independent pricing write-ups. This is a research-based comparison, not a hands-on test, so we don’t rate image quality or publish speed figures. Both vendors’ pricing pages blocked automated reading or showed no prices when we checked on November 3, 2026, so plan prices below are cross-checked across multiple recent independent sources that agree with each other. Adobe’s own plans FAQ confirmed the Firefly credit allowances. Confirm prices on each vendor’s site before you buy.

MidStandard: $30 / $24Pro: $19.99, 4,000 credits
HeavyPro: $60 / $48Pro Plus: $49.99, 10,000 credits
TopMega: $120 / $96Premium: $199.99, 50,000 credits

The sticker prices line up closely at the bottom, but the two products meter usage in completely different ways, which matters more than the price.

Midjourney sells GPU time. Basic includes about 200 minutes of fast GPU time a month, Standard 15 hours, Pro 30 hours and Mega 60 hours, and extra fast time is reported at $4 an hour. From Standard up you also get unlimited Relax mode, which queues image jobs at lower priority without using fast time. Pro and Mega add Relax mode for video. Annual billing cuts every plan by about 20%.

Firefly sells credits, but standard images are free of them. Adobe’s plans FAQ says every paid plan includes unlimited standard image and vector generations. The monthly credits (2,000 on Standard up to 50,000 on Premium) are spent on premium features such as video, audio and third-party partner models. Premium also includes unlimited use of the Firefly Video Model. Recent sources list Firefly’s individual plans as monthly subscriptions; if you already pay for Creative Cloud, check your plan first, because recent sources report that Creative Cloud subscriptions include their own Firefly credit allowance.

Three takeaways:

  • For unlimited still images, Firefly is cheaper. Firefly Standard at $9.99 gives unlimited standard image generations. Midjourney’s equivalent, unlimited Relax images, starts at $30 on Standard.
  • Midjourney Basic is a taster. With no Relax mode, Basic users stop when the fast minutes run out unless they buy more time. Most regular Midjourney users end up on Standard.
  • Firefly’s credit math gets harder with video. If you generate video or use partner models, credits drain at rates that vary by feature and model, so heavy video users should check Adobe’s credit tables carefully.

Free plans and trials

Firefly has a free tier with a limited number of daily generations. Adobe doesn’t publish a fixed daily number, but it is enough to see whether the tool suits your work before you pay.

Midjourney has no free plan and no standing free trial. You have to subscribe, at least to Basic for $10, before you can generate anything. If you want to try before you buy, Firefly wins this category outright.

Commercial use, licensing and privacy

This is the clearest strategic difference between the two.

Firefly. Adobe’s FAQ states that outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use, because the models are trained on licensed content and public-domain content whose copyright has expired. Adobe attaches Content Credentials to Firefly outputs, and eligible enterprise customers can receive IP indemnification for select outputs. Two caveats: the commercial-safety statement covers Adobe’s own models, not the third-party partner models available inside Firefly, and Adobe says you’re responsible for judging whether partner-model output suits your project. Indemnification is an enterprise feature, not something individual plans get.

Midjourney. Recent sources report that paid Midjourney plans include commercial usage rights, but that companies with more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must be on Pro or Mega. Privacy is the bigger catch for business users: images are public by default, and Stealth mode, which keeps them private, is available only on Pro ($60 a month) and Mega ($120 a month). Agencies working on unreleased client campaigns should budget for Pro.

If licensing questions or client confidentiality are part of your job, Firefly is the safer default. Neither vendor’s statements replace reading the current terms for the plan you buy.

Workflow and ease of use

Firefly’s biggest practical advantage is where it lives. It works in its own web app and inside Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Express, so a designer can generate or extend an image without leaving the file they’re editing. That integration is why it scores 8 for ease of use on our rubric, against 7.5 for Midjourney, and why its value is highest for people who already use Adobe apps.

Midjourney runs in its own web app and on Discord. It is a standalone generator rather than an editing suite, so finished work usually moves into another tool for layout, text and export. For artists and concept designers who generate many variations and pick the best, that standalone focus suits the job. Support is the other gap: Firefly scores 8 for support on our rubric and Midjourney 6.

Midjourney: best for distinctive artistic output

Midjourney matches Firefly on features (8.5 each) and its reputation rests on its look: if you want stylized, artistic imagery or concept art, it is the reference point many creatives start from. Standard at $30 a month, with unlimited Relax images, is the plan most regular users need.

The trade-offs are no free plan, public images below Pro, a weaker support score, and no public affiliate program, which we note only for transparency; it doesn’t affect scores.

Adobe Firefly: best for commercial and Adobe-based work

Firefly scores higher on pricing, ease of use and support, and leads overall on our rubric. Unlimited standard images from $9.99, a free tier, built-in Photoshop and Illustrator access, and Adobe’s licensed-training position make it the lower-risk choice for marketing teams, agencies and small businesses.

The downsides: credit math becomes complicated once you use video or partner models, the Premium tier is expensive at $199.99 a month, and the best value depends on already working in Adobe’s apps.

Final verdict

Adobe Firefly is the better pick for most business users: it has a free tier, unlimited standard images on every paid plan, deep Adobe integration and the clearest commercial-use position of the two. Midjourney is the better pick for artists and creatives who value its distinctive style above everything else and are willing to pay $30 a month for unlimited Relax images, or $60 if privacy matters.

If you’re unsure, start with Firefly Free. If its output doesn’t give you the look you want, a month of Midjourney Standard is the natural next step.

FAQ

Is Midjourney or Adobe Firefly better?

It depends on the job. Firefly is better for commercial, brand and client work and for anyone already using Photoshop or Illustrator. Midjourney is better if you want a distinctive artistic look and are happy to work in its own web app or Discord. Firefly scores higher overall on our rubric, mainly on ease of use and support.

Which is cheaper, Midjourney or Adobe Firefly?

The entry prices are nearly identical: Firefly Standard is $9.99 a month and Midjourney Basic is $10 a month, or $8 a month billed annually. The real difference is what you get. Firefly Standard includes unlimited standard image generations, while Midjourney Basic gives about 200 minutes of fast GPU time and no Relax mode.

Does Midjourney have a free plan?

No. Midjourney has no free plan or standing free trial; plans start at $10 a month. Adobe Firefly has a free tier with a limited number of daily generations, which is enough to try it before paying.

Is Adobe Firefly safe for commercial use?

Adobe states that outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use because the models are trained on licensed and public-domain content. That claim does not cover partner models available inside Firefly, and IP indemnification is offered only to eligible enterprise customers. Read the terms for the plan you buy.

Can I keep my Midjourney images private?

Only on the Pro ($60 a month) and Mega ($120 a month) plans, which include Stealth mode. On Basic and Standard, images you create are visible in Midjourney’s public gallery.
