Best ChatGPT Alternatives in 2026: Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot

Quick answerGemini is the best ChatGPT alternative for most people: its free plan is generous and Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month. Choose Claude for long-form writing and coding ($20 a month), Perplexity for research with cited sources ($20), and Microsoft Copilot if you already use Office, from $9.99 with Microsoft 365 Personal.

ChatGPT is the default AI assistant for a lot of people, but it isn’t the only good one, and for some jobs it isn’t the best one. Maybe you want a cheaper paid plan, an assistant that writes long documents more carefully, answers that cite their sources, or AI that lives inside the office software you already pay for. Each of those needs points to a different alternative.

We ranked four ChatGPT alternatives with our published rubric (features 30%, pricing 20%, ease of use 20%, support 10%, value 20%). The rankings are based on each vendor’s pricing pages, help centers and documentation, all checked on November 6, 2026. We have not tested these products hands-on, and the scores come from the rubric sub-scores in our data, not from output tests. Prices change often in this category, so confirm on the vendor’s page before you buy.

For reference, ChatGPT itself runs from a free plan through Go at $8, Plus at $20 and three Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month, according to multiple recent sources we cross-checked; see our ChatGPT review for the details. Every alternative below has a free plan, so you can try it before you cancel anything.

1. Gemini: best overall ChatGPT alternative

Gemini ranks first on our rubric because it combines a broad feature set with the lowest prices in this group. It covers the same ground as ChatGPT for most people: chat, writing, image generation, video generation on paid plans, voice conversations through Gemini Live, and Deep Research for longer reports.

Google’s subscriptions page lists these US plans:

  • Free: $0 with a Google account. Flash-Lite model, Deep Research, Gemini Live, image generation and 15 GB of storage
  • Google AI Plus: $4.99 a month. Twice the free usage, the Flash model, video generation, 200 Flow credits and 400 GB of storage
  • Google AI Pro: $19.99 a month. Four times the free usage, access to Google’s Pro models and Gemini 4 Argon, 1,000 Flow credits, 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite
  • Google AI Ultra: from $99.99 a month for five times AI Pro’s limits, or $199.99 for 20 times, with 20 TB of storage and YouTube Premium

The storage is the hidden value. If you already pay Google for cloud storage, AI Pro at $19.99 replaces that bill and adds the AI, which makes it cheaper in practice than ChatGPT Plus at the same price.

The trade-offs: Google describes limits as multipliers of the free plan rather than message counts, which makes it hard to know exactly how much you get. And many of the best features, such as Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Drive, assume you live in Google’s apps. Our Gemini review covers each plan in depth.

2. Claude: best for writing and coding

Claude is the closest like-for-like replacement for ChatGPT Plus, and it’s the one to pick if your work is mostly writing, editing, analyzing long documents or coding. Its paid plans include Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent, from the $20 Pro plan up.

Claude’s pricing page lists:

  • Free: $0. Web search, memory, file creation, code execution and up to five Projects, with usage limits every five hours and every week. No Opus models or Claude Code
  • Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 a year). Adds Opus, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365
  • Max: $100 a month, monthly billing only. Five times Pro usage plus $100 a month in API credits
  • Ultra: $200 a month, monthly billing only. No five-hour limit for verified accounts, 10 times Pro’s weekly usage and $200 a month in API credits

Two limits matter if you’re moving from ChatGPT. First, Claude has no native image generation, so if you make images regularly you’ll need another tool. Second, usage resets in five-hour windows plus a weekly cap, which can interrupt a heavy day on the Pro plan. Anthropic’s help center notes that the API credits on Max and Ultra are for building on the Claude Platform and don’t cover the Claude apps or interactive Claude Code.

3. Perplexity: best for research with sources

Perplexity is less a general assistant and more an answer engine. Ask a question and it searches the web, writes an answer and cites its sources inline, so you can click through and check each claim. That makes it the best alternative here for research, fact-finding and anything where you need to show where a fact came from.

Perplexity’s help center and its own pricing posts list:

  • Free: $0. Unlimited basic search, three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month
  • Education Pro: $10 a month for students and educators verified through SheerID
  • Pro: $20 a month or $200 a year. Advanced models, image and video generation, Projects and file uploads
  • Max: $200 a month. The highest model access and early access to new products
  • Enterprise Pro: $40 per seat a month or $400 a year. 400 Pro Searches a week per seat and a commitment that data is never used for training
  • Enterprise Max: $325 per seat a month or $3,250 a year, with ten times Enterprise Pro’s limits

The jump from Pro to Max is steep, and most individuals won’t need Max. Perplexity also isn’t the best choice for long-form drafting; its strength is finding and summarizing information, and its answers are only as good as the sources it finds. Many people use it alongside Claude or Gemini rather than instead of them.

4. Microsoft Copilot: best if you work in Office

Microsoft no longer sells Copilot Pro on its own. Paid Copilot usage now comes bundled with Microsoft 365, which means you’re buying Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and cloud storage with the AI. If you already pay for Office, that bundle is the reason to choose Copilot over ChatGPT: the assistant works inside the documents and spreadsheets you already use.

Microsoft’s individual pricing page lists:

  • Free Copilot: $0, limited by available capacity
  • Microsoft 365 Personal: $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year for one person, with more Copilot usage than the free tier
  • Microsoft 365 Family: $12.99 a month or $129.99 a year for up to six people, with the same Copilot tier as Personal, for the owner only
  • Microsoft 365 Premium: $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. “Extensive” Copilot usage and limited agentic AI, for the subscription owner only
  • Microsoft 365 Pro: $99.99 a month, monthly billing only. The highest individual Copilot usage, including agentic AI, and 5 TB of storage

The catch is that Microsoft describes usage in relative terms (“higher”, “extensive”, “highest”) rather than numbers, and on Family and Premium the AI is for the account owner only, not everyone sharing the plan. If you don’t use Office, the bundle is a poor deal compared with Gemini or Claude.

For small businesses

For a team, the per-seat plan matters more than the consumer price. Claude Team costs $25 per seat a month, or $20 billed annually, for 2 to 150 seats, and Premium seats with five times the usage are $125 monthly or $100 annually. Perplexity Enterprise Pro is $40 per seat a month. Microsoft’s business route is the Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on, listed at $21 per user a month on top of a Microsoft 365 business plan. Google Workspace businesses usually get Gemini through their Workspace plan instead. How to choose

  1. Start from what you already pay for. Google storage subscribers get the most from Gemini AI Pro. Office subscribers should try Copilot through the Microsoft 365 plan they have before buying anything new.
  2. Name your main job. Writing and coding point to Claude. Research with citations points to Perplexity. A bit of everything points to Gemini.
  3. Check what you’d lose. Claude has no image generation, Perplexity is weaker at long drafts, and Copilot’s best features need Office. If you rely on ChatGPT’s images or voice, test those in the alternative first.
  4. Use the free plans for a week. All four have one. Run the same real tasks through each before you switch a paid subscription.

Bottom line

For most people leaving ChatGPT, Gemini is the best alternative: it does most of what ChatGPT does, its free plan is strong, and its paid plans start at $4.99 a month with storage included. Choose Claude if your work is writing, document analysis or coding, Perplexity if you need answers with sources, and Microsoft Copilot if your days are spent in Word, Excel and Outlook. All four changed their plans in 2026, so check the current pricing page before you commit to a year.

FAQ

What is the best free alternative to ChatGPT?

Gemini has the most complete free plan of the four: Deep Research, Gemini Live, image generation and 15 GB of Google storage with any Google account. Claude’s free plan is the better pick for writing and document work, and Perplexity’s free plan suits quick research with citations, but it allows only three Pro Searches a day.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

It depends on the job. Claude is built around long documents, careful writing and coding, and its $20 Pro plan includes Claude Code. ChatGPT has the broader feature set, including image generation and voice. Claude has no native image generation, so people who need images usually keep ChatGPT or add another tool.

Which ChatGPT alternative is cheapest?

Gemini’s Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month is the cheapest paid plan here, cheaper than ChatGPT Go at $8. Perplexity’s Education Pro is $10 a month for verified students and educators, and Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month adds Copilot to the Office apps.

Is Microsoft Copilot free?

Yes, the Copilot app has a free tier, limited by available capacity. Paid Copilot usage comes bundled with Microsoft 365: Personal at $9.99 a month, Family at $12.99, Premium at $19.99 and Pro at $99.99. On Family and Premium, only the subscription owner gets the AI features.

What is the best ChatGPT alternative for a small business?

Match the assistant to the software you already run. Google Workspace businesses should look at Gemini, Office businesses at Microsoft 365 Copilot Business, and teams that want a standalone assistant at Claude Team, which starts at $25 per seat monthly with a two-seat minimum.
