Best AI Video Tools in 2026: Descript, HeyGen and Runway Compared

Quick answerDescript is the best AI video tool for most people because it edits video by editing the transcript, from $16 a month billed annually. Pick HeyGen for avatar and translated videos, from $24 a month annually, and Runway for generating new footage from text or images, from $12 a month annually.

“AI video tool” covers three very different jobs. Some tools help you edit footage you already shot. Some generate a presenter who reads your script. And some generate brand-new footage from a text prompt or a still image. The best tool for you depends almost entirely on which of those jobs you have, so this roundup picks one strong option for each.

We ranked three popular tools with our published rubric (features 30%, pricing 20%, ease of use 20%, support 10%, value 20%). The rankings are based on each vendor’s pricing page, help center and documentation, all checked on November 4, 2026. We have not tested these products hands-on, and every score comes from the rubric sub-scores in our data, not from a test lab. Confirm prices on the vendor’s page before you buy, because all three changed their plans or credits this year.

The short list

RankToolBest forPrice fromFree plan
1DescriptEditing talking-head video and podcasts$16/mo (annual)Yes, 1 media hour/mo
2HeyGenAvatar presenters and translated video$24/mo (annual)Yes, 1-minute videos
3RunwayGenerating new footage from text or images$12/mo (annual)Yes, 125 one-time credits

A note on the ranking: Runway has the highest feature score of the three, but it ranks third because credit-based generation is harder to budget and its free credits are a one-time allowance. If you specifically need generated footage, Runway is still the pick. Read the “best for” column as well as the rank.

1. Descript: best for editing video you’ve already recorded

Descript’s core idea is simple: it transcribes your recording, and you edit the video by editing the text. Delete a sentence in the transcript and the matching footage disappears. That makes it a natural fit for interviews, podcasts, webinars, tutorials and any video where someone talks to the camera. Descript’s AI features include filler-word removal, captions, AI voice for patching words and audio cleanup.

Descript’s pricing page lists four self-serve plans. Prices below are per person per month billed annually, with the month-to-month price in brackets:

  • Free: $0, one media hour a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p export
  • Hobbyist: $16 ($24 monthly), 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month, watermark-free 1080p export
  • Creator: $24 ($35 monthly), 30 media hours and 800 AI credits a month, 4K export
  • Business: $50 ($65 monthly), 40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits a month, plus team features such as Brand Studio

Two details matter when you budget. First, “media hours” count what you import or record, not just what you publish, so long raw recordings use up an allowance quickly. Second, Descript says annual billing saves up to 35%, which is a big gap; start monthly, then switch once you know your usage.

Descript isn’t a generator. It won’t invent footage or a presenter for you. For that, look at the next two picks.

2. HeyGen: best for avatar and translated videos

HeyGen turns a script into a video with a realistic AI presenter, either a stock avatar or one based on you. It’s built for training videos, product explainers, sales outreach and social clips where filming a person every time would be slow or expensive. Its video translation feature re-voices an existing video in another language with lip sync, which is the main reason marketing and training teams shortlist it.

HeyGen moved to credit-based plans. Its pricing page currently lists:

  • Free: $0, videos up to one minute, with a watermark
  • Creator: $29 a month, or $24 a month billed annually, with 600 credits, videos up to 30 minutes and 1080p export
  • Pro: from $49 a month with 1,000 credits, scaling to larger credit tiers, and up to 4K export
  • Business: $149 a month for the first seat with 1,500 credits, plus $20 per additional seat, and videos up to 60 minutes

This is a correction to our earlier data: we previously listed Pro at $99 a month, a figure that still appears in an older HeyGen help article and some third-party guides. HeyGen’s current pricing page lists Pro from $49, so that’s the figure we use.

The limitations are the ones you’d expect. Avatar video can look uncanny in some contexts, and credit allowances, not a video count, decide how much you can make each month. If you plan long or frequent videos, check how many credits your typical video uses before choosing a tier.

3. Runway: best for generating new footage

Runway is the tool on this list that creates footage that didn’t exist before: text-to-video, image-to-video and AI editing tools for changing shots you already have. Creators use it for B-roll, concept visuals, music videos and ad drafts. According to Runway’s help center, its top plan includes access to all Runway models, including third-party models.

Runway’s pricing changed this year. It stopped selling its Unlimited plan on June 1, 2026 and replaced it with a credit-based plan called Max. Runway’s help center says eligible legacy Unlimited access runs through November 30, 2026, and monthly Unlimited subscribers move to Max at the same $95 price. Current plans, per Runway’s pricing page:

  • Free: 125 one-time credits that don’t expire, 5GB storage
  • Standard: $12 a month billed annually ($15 monthly), 625 credits a month, no watermark, up to 3 projects
  • Pro: $28 a month billed annually ($35 monthly), 2,250 credits a month, unlimited 4K upscaling
  • Max: $76 a month billed annually ($95 monthly), 9,500 credits a month that roll over for one month, plus HDR and ProRes output

On Standard and Pro, unused credits don’t roll over. Runway’s help center says extra credits can be bought in blocks of at least 1,000.

The catch is predictability. High-quality generated video uses credits quickly, and every attempt costs credits, including the ones you discard, so the number of usable seconds per month varies with the model, length and how many attempts a shot takes. Budget for experimentation.

For small businesses

Most small businesses need one of these, not all three. If you record webinars, tutorials or customer stories, Descript Business costs $50 per person a month billed annually and supports teams of up to five, with extra seats billed separately. If you need product explainers or training videos without filming, HeyGen Business starts at $149 a month for the first seat plus $20 per extra seat, though a single owner can start on Creator at $24 a month billed annually. Runway prices per user, so a two-person team on Standard pays $24 a month billed annually. How to choose

  1. Name the job first. Editing recorded footage points to Descript. A presenter reading a script points to HeyGen. Footage that doesn’t exist yet points to Runway.
  2. Read the meter. Descript meters media hours, HeyGen and Runway meter credits. A cheap plan with a small allowance can cost more per finished minute than a pricier one.
  3. Check the free plan’s limits honestly. All three free plans are trials in practice: watermarks, short lengths or one-time credits.
  4. Start monthly. Annual billing saves roughly 17% to 35% on these tools, but all three changed plans or credits in 2026. Commit for a year after a month of real use.

Bottom line

For most people whose videos involve someone talking, Descript is the most practical AI video tool: it makes editing as easy as editing a document, from $16 a month billed annually. Choose HeyGen when you want a presenter without a camera or need to translate existing videos, and Runway when you need to generate new footage and can budget for credits. Whichever you pick, check the current plan page first, since all three revised their pricing this year.

FAQ

What is the best AI video tool for beginners?

Descript is the easiest starting point if your videos involve people talking, because you cut and rearrange footage by editing a text transcript. Its free plan includes one media hour a month, with 720p watermarked exports, so you can try the workflow before paying.

Which AI video tool has a free plan?

All three do, with limits. Descript gives one media hour a month and 100 one-time AI credits. HeyGen’s free plan makes watermarked videos up to one minute long. Runway gives 125 one-time credits that don’t refresh but don’t expire either.

Did Runway get rid of its Unlimited plan?

Yes. Runway stopped selling Unlimited on June 1, 2026 and replaced it with Max, at $95 a month or $76 billed annually, with 9,500 credits a month that roll over for one month. Runway’s help center says eligible legacy Unlimited access runs through November 30, 2026.

How much does HeyGen cost?

HeyGen’s pricing page lists Creator at $29 a month ($24 billed annually) with 600 credits, Pro from $49 a month with 1,000 credits and larger credit tiers above that, and Business at $149 a month for the first seat plus $20 per extra seat.

Can AI video tools replace a video editor?

For simple talking-head clips, social cuts, captions and training videos, these tools cover much of the work. For polished brand films, they speed up drafts and rough cuts, but most teams still need a person to review, trim and check every frame before publishing.
