Best AI Image Generators in 2026: Midjourney, Firefly, Leonardo, Ideogram and Canva
AI image generators have converged on similar headline prices, roughly $10 to $30 a month for a useful plan, but they meter usage in completely different ways. Midjourney sells GPU time, Firefly sells credits, Leonardo sells tokens, Ideogram sells priority credits and Canva counts “AI uses”. The cheapest sticker price is a poor guide to how many images you’ll actually get.
We ranked five popular tools using our published rubric (features 30%, pricing 20%, ease of use 20%, support 10%, value 20%). Rankings are based on vendor documentation, pricing pages and recent pricing trackers, not hands-on testing. Several vendors (Midjourney, Leonardo, Ideogram, Canva and Adobe’s main plans page) block automated reading, so we cross-checked their prices across multiple recent independent sources on October 29, 2026. Confirm on the vendor’s page before you buy.
A note on the ranking: our rubric rewards ease of use and price as well as raw capability. That’s why Canva, a design editor with a generator built in, ranks first, and Midjourney, whose output is the most distinctive of the five, ranks last on score while remaining the best pick for one specific job. Read the “best for” labels as well as the numbers.
The short list
| Rank | Tool | Best for | Price from | Free plan |

| 2 | Adobe Firefly | Commercial and brand work | $9.99/mo | Yes, limited daily |
| 3 | Leonardo.Ai | Control over models and styles | $12/mo | Yes, daily tokens |
| 4 | Ideogram | Text inside images | $15/mo (annual) | Yes, public images |
| 5 | Midjourney | Distinctive artistic style | $10/mo | No |
1. Canva: best for non-designers
Most people who search for an AI image generator don’t want a standalone artwork. They want a social post, a flyer, a slide or a thumbnail. Canva’s advantage is that its AI image tools (part of Magic Studio) sit inside the template editor, so a generated image goes straight into a layout with your fonts, colors and brand kit.
Pricing has moved several times this year. As of a late-October capture of Canva’s US pricing page, Pro is $144 a year or $18 billed monthly for one person, and Business is $25 per person a month or $250 a year. Pro covers a single user, so a team needs Business seats.
The free plan got tighter: trackers report Canva cut its free AI allowance to up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month, down from 200 Standard uses. A September snapshot of the pricing page listed Pro at up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium or 20 Ultra AI uses a month, and Canva says actual usage typically lands at the low end of its ranges.
The trade-off is image quality. Canva’s generator is convenient rather than class-leading, and Canva itself owns Leonardo.Ai (number 3 here) for users who need more control.
2. Adobe Firefly: best for commercial work
Firefly is the pick when licensing matters. Adobe positions it as commercially safe because its own models are trained on licensed content, and it’s built into Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Express, so designers can generate and edit without leaving the apps they already use.
Adobe’s plans FAQ lists four paid tiers: Standard with 2,000 monthly credits, Pro with 4,000, Pro Plus with 10,000 and Premium with 50,000, and says every paid plan includes unlimited standard generations. That last point changes the math: credits are mainly spent on premium features such as video, audio and partner models, not on everyday image generation. Premium also includes unlimited use of the Firefly Video Model.
Adobe’s FAQ doesn’t show prices in readable text, so prices come from recent independent checks: $9.99, $19.99, $49.99 and $199.99 a month respectively. An earlier version of the Pro plan was widely reported at 7,000 credits; current sources and Adobe’s FAQ agree on 4,000. The free plan offers a limited number of daily generations, and Adobe doesn’t publish the exact count.
3. Leonardo.Ai: best for control over style
Leonardo, now owned by Canva, is the tool for people who want to choose models, tune styles and generate consistent assets, such as game art, product mockups or character sheets. It also generates video from the same account.
Leonardo renamed its plans, so many guides still use the old Apprentice, Artisan and Maestro names. The current individual tiers, per recent pricing trackers, are Essential at $12 a month (8,500 tokens), Premium at $30 (25,000 tokens) and Ultimate at $60 (60,000 tokens), with up to 20% off for annual billing. Team plans (Starter and Growth) are priced per seat.
The free plan has historically offered about 150 fast tokens a day. A tracker capture from October 26, 2026 shows Leonardo now limits free users to its “Auto” model selection and no longer lists the daily token figure on the plan card, while paid plans advertise 80-plus models. Free images are public. If you’re evaluating Leonardo on the free plan, expect a narrower experience than paying users get.
4. Ideogram: best for text in images
Many image generators still struggle to spell. Ideogram’s reputation rests on rendering legible text inside images, which makes it a practical choice for posters, YouTube thumbnails, event graphics and logo concepts.
Ideogram also made the biggest pricing move of the group this month. On October 5, 2026, according to pricing trackers, it more than doubled bundled priority credits at unchanged prices:
- Plus: $15 a month billed annually ($20 monthly), now 2,400 priority credits a month, up from 1,000
- Pro: $42 a month billed annually ($60 monthly), now 7,500 credits, up from 3,500
- Team: $20 per user billed annually ($30 monthly), 3,600 credits per user, two-user minimum
Paid plans also include unlimited slow credits, which generate at lower queue priority. The free plan offers weekly slow credits for eligible accounts and public images only; Ideogram’s page no longer states the weekly number it previously listed (10).
5. Midjourney: best for a distinctive artistic look
Midjourney remains the name people associate with striking, stylized AI imagery and concept art. It scores lowest of the five on our rubric because of its pricing structure, lack of a free plan and limited support, not because of output style.
Midjourney publishes its plans only in its documentation, which blocks automated reading, so these figures are cross-checked across recent independent sources. There are four plans: Basic at $10 a month (about 3.3 fast GPU hours, no Relax mode), Standard at $30 (15 fast hours plus unlimited Relax images), Pro at $60 (30 fast hours) and Mega at $120 (60 fast hours). Annual billing takes 20% off. Midjourney’s docs say unlimited Relax-mode video and Stealth mode, which keeps your images private, require Pro or Mega.
Two things to plan around. Basic’s lack of Relax mode means it runs out quickly for regular users, so Standard is the realistic starting plan. And anything you make on Basic or Standard is publicly visible, which rules those plans out for confidential client work.
Which plan fits your budget
| Budget | Pick | Monthly cost (list) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | Leonardo, Ideogram, Firefly or Canva free plans | $0 | Limited, mostly public images |
| About $10 | Firefly Standard | $9.99 | Unlimited standard images, 2,000 credits |

| About $30 | Midjourney Standard or Leonardo Premium | $30 | Unlimited Relax images, or 25,000 tokens |

How to choose
- Decide whether you need images or finished designs. If the image goes into a layout, Canva’s editor saves a step. If the image is the product, use a dedicated generator.
- Check privacy on your plan. Free plans at Leonardo and Ideogram, and Midjourney below Pro, make your images public.
- Read the meter, not the price. A credit, token or GPU hour buys a different number of images depending on model, resolution and whether you generate video.
- Check commercial terms for client work. Firefly is positioned for commercial safety; for every tool, read the current terms for your specific plan.
- Start monthly. Annual billing saves 20% to 30% on most of these tools, but prices and allowances have changed repeatedly in 2026. Commit for a year only after a month of real use.

Bottom line
For most people making social graphics and marketing assets, Canva is the most practical choice. For commercial and brand work, especially inside Adobe apps, choose Adobe Firefly, whose paid plans now include unlimited standard image generations. Pick Leonardo.Ai if you want to control models and styles, Ideogram if your images need readable text, and Midjourney Standard if a distinctive artistic look is what you’re paying for.
FAQ
Which AI image generator has the best free plan?
Leonardo.Ai, Ideogram, Adobe Firefly and Canva all have free plans; Midjourney does not. Free plans are limited: Leonardo and Ideogram make free images public, Canva cut its free allowance to 20 AI uses a month, and Firefly gives a limited number of daily generations.
Is Midjourney worth paying for?
If you want a distinctive, artistic look, it’s the reference point. Basic costs $10 a month but has no Relax mode, so Standard at $30 (unlimited Relax images) is the plan most regular users end up on. Images stay public unless you pay for Pro at $60 or Mega at $120.
Which AI image generator is safest for commercial use?
Adobe positions Firefly as commercially safe because its own models are trained on licensed content. Commercial-use terms differ by vendor and plan, so read the current terms for the plan you buy, especially for client work.
What is the best AI image generator for text and logos?
Ideogram is known for rendering legible text inside images, which makes it a strong pick for posters, thumbnails and logo drafts. In October 2026 it more than doubled monthly priority credits on paid plans without raising prices.
How much does an AI image generator cost?
Entry plans run from $9.99 a month (Firefly Standard) to $12 (Leonardo Essential, or Canva Pro billed annually). Heavier plans cost $30 to $60 a month, and studio tiers reach $120 (Midjourney Mega) or $199.99 (Firefly Premium).
